King Gordogan (Croatian: Kralj Gordogan) is a surrealist play, an important but little known masterpiece written by Croatian surrealist poet and artist Radovan Ivsic in 1943. This soundtrack was created for a production, only the third in the United Sates at the time, and was produced at Educational Center for the Arts in New Haven, CT. Directed by Daniel Scott Fine, it is a ferociously intelligent, witty and amusing reflection on absolute power. A cross of Ionesco and Becket, the text tells the surreal story of a king who usurps a throne, imprisons his murdered predecessor's daughter and determines to kill her, his own son who loves her, and everyone who resists or collaborates with him. The only people who can save the kingdom are a Fairy and a Knight who has been given a potion of forgetfulness. But they are too in love to care about anything else. The characters are as strange, wild and funny as any known to fairy tales, only their fate is total obliteration.

The soundtrack is full of loops, surreal sounds, effects, and rhythms which repeat as an obsession to enhance the play's weirdness. Emphasize: OBSESSION. I post it here more as a sonic-curio, rather than an "album" to download.

Sadly, in 2017, this play seems even more relevant than ever.
